peter + melissa // michigan farm wedding

Today, I have PART TWO of Peter + Melissa’s wedding celebration for you! (In case you missed PART ONE, click here!)

We pick up the wedding celebration on the Saturday following the Wednesday evening events. This time, instead of metro Detroit, we found ourselves in Port Hope, Michigan. It’s “the little town with a big welcome”, just south of the tip-of-the-thumb of Michigan’s mitten. The town is located directly on Lake Huron and is made up of mostly farms and lakefront cottages. One of those farms belongs to Melissa’s family! They have owned the property since 1900 and a lot of Melissa’s childhood memories happened at that farm. Coincidentally, many of my own childhood memories happened in Port Hope – just a few miles from the farm… at my grandparents’ cottage. It was so special to share some memories of that little town and photograph her wedding day in a place that was so meaningful to her!

Peter + Melissa put a lot of time and thought into making the day beautiful + enjoyable. They had a first look by the old rope swing in the barn, and we took portraits in the wheat fields. There were handcrafted decorations all over – and Peter even built several tables that were used for the head table and bar! Melissa’s godfather officiated a short, but sweet ceremony. They spoke handwritten vows to each other and watered a tree with water from local lakes in each of their hometowns – as a symbol of unity. (And the tree will be planted at the farm!) They had lawn games during cocktail hour and delicious BBQ for dinner. They did a great job implementing decor + traditions honoring Melissa’s American heritage and Peter’s New Zealand heritage.

Jonathan + I loved getting to know their family + friends… many of which stayed on the property or in cottages nearby so that they could all be together all weekend. Additionally, this may have been our most international party to date – having representatives from across the US, Italy, Germany, Austria, New Zealand and elsewhere to celebrate with Peter + Melissa. It was so special that so many people could make the trip to join them that day!

Peter + Melissa, we are grateful to have been invited to celebrate alongside you for your wedding weekend. I hope it was everything you were dreamed it to be – and I’m so excited to share Saturday’s preview with you today!

peter + melissa // an intimate weekday wedding in metro detroit

When Peter + Melissa sat down to plan their wedding, they had a few thoughts to figure out. Melissa has always dreamed of getting married at the parish where she grew up – where all her sacraments had taken place. But, she loved the thought of having a reception at her grandma’s farm – the one that has been in the family since 1900… and the place where she spent most of her summers as a child. However, the church and the farm are almost three hours a part. Additionally, Peter is from New Zealand. His family + friends were literally flying across the world to celebrate with them… how do they combine all these elements into a fun, carefree wedding celebration? Their solution – make it a couple day event!

This wedding story is part one of two – let’s start with the Wednesday celebrations!

We joined Peter + Melissa and their immediate families in Redford, Michigan at Our Lady of Loretto. There, we all gathered as witnesses to their marriage vows. It was an intimate + sweet ceremony. Afterwards, we headed to Northville, Michigan where Peter + Melissa had designed an Americana-themed dinner at Garage Grill + Fuel Bar. We ate in the “Model A” room and were treated to a variety of small bites including – coney dogs + beef sliders and some fancier fare like roasted duck + coconut chicken. The families ate + drank together – swapping stories about the bride + groom and sharing memories from around Michigan and the world. We loved getting to know their families in the intimate setting – and it was a delightful start to the wedding weekend!

trevor + lynée // aquinas college wedding

“If you were a boat, my darling, I’d be the wind at your back. If you were afraid, my darling, I’d be the courage you lack. If you were a bird, then I’d be a tree and you would come home, my darling, to me. If you were asleep, then I’d be a dream. Wherever you are, that’s where my heart will be… Oh, do you know we belong together? Oh, do you know my heart is yours?” – BOAT SONG by JJ Heller

It’s hard to put this wedding story into words. Love, laughter, grace, beauty, and joy resonated throughout every moment of the day. Separately, Trevor + Lynée have had difficult, challenging journeys. But through what they say is nothing short of a “miracle”, they found one other and found the courage + strength to say “yes” to a new adventure together. And together, they make an amazing team. They are a delight to be around. They are compassionate, kind, and joyful… and most importantly, they absolutely adore each other and each others’ kids! :)

They wed on a warm, overcast June afternoon at The Branch on the southeast side of Grand Rapids. Their ceremony was sincere and intimate – beautifully reflecting their relationship – past, present and future. After the ceremony, they rode in a vintage Ford Model A to Aquinas College where we celebrated at the Cook Carriage House with close family + friends. It’s been an honor to walk this road with them to their wedding day and I’m thrilled to share a preview of their story with you today. Sit back and enjoy – this is a little lengthy ;)

ps – if you can’t get enough of these two, you can check out their engagement pictures here ;)

Trevor + Lynée gifted each of the kids with a Leland Bluestone necklace (the same stone in Lynée’s engagement ring). Leland Bluestone is created from slag that is dumped in the harbor…and by the time the debris washes up to shore, they become smooth, blue stones. Trevor + Lynee resonate with the idea of creating beauty from ashes – and the Leland Bluestone has become a symbol of that in their relationship and with their families.

andy + rachel // metro detroit wedding photography

Andy + Rachel have something special. Even though they grew up going to the same school and attended the same church, it took several years before they caught each others’ eye. (It’s all about the right timing, isn’t it?) A love of Detroit sports initially brought them together, but their personalities + values really solidified their relationship. Andy is sincere, loyal, calm and has a servant’s heart. Rachel is intentional, kind, hilarious, and thoughtful. They compliment each other perfectly, they love each other wholeheartedly, and care deeply for those around them. I’ve known Andy for a while (my brother was one of his groomsmen!), but getting to know them as a couple has been SUCH a delight. I couldn’t have been more thrilled to be a part of their wedding day!

Andy + Rachel wed at Highland Park Baptist Church in Southfield, Michigan – the place that is so dear to each of them and where their relationship began. They said their vows underneath a beautiful wooden arch (handmade by Andy’s dad) and were surrounded by family + friends as they committed their lives to each other. Dinner + dancing followed at Glen Oaks Golf Club in Farmington. The weather was lovely, the company was awesome and we even had a surprise guest show up – Paws, the Detroit Tigers‘ mascot! I could go on and on about how wonderful this day was… but I’ll let the pictures keep telling the story ;) Congrats, Andy + Rachel!!Andy + Rachel Wedding

hailey + josh // grand haven engagement

Last week, Jonathan + I spent an evening in Grand Haven, Michigan with two fantastic people – Hailey + Josh! These two will be getting married later this summer in downtown Detroit (with a Tigers’ baseball theme – they are huge fans!) and we cannot wait to celebrate with them. But first, we decided to spend some time in Grand Haven – where they currently live and in a place that’s important to them and their relationship. We had to maneuver some summer storms, but who doesn’t like some moody, overcast evening light? We had a blast adventuring around together and getting to know them more. Here are some of my favorites from their session!Hailey + Josh
