riley + madisen // stonegate glass wedding chapel

Today, we are delighted to share with you the wedding story of my dear cousin, Madisen and her groom, Riley! Madisen is the youngest cousin on my dad’s side of the family – and it has been a joy to watch her grow into a kind, intelligent woman over the years. When we met Riley almost two years ago, we liked him instantly! They clicked with each other and he clicked with the family. We could tell that he was a keeper and loved seeing the two of them together! But let me back up a little bit… ;)

Riley + Madisen spent most of their formative years growing up on different continents. Her family was in Europe, his family was in Africa. Their paths crossed at a summer conference in the United States when they were both finishing high school. Almost instantly, they connected with each other, became fast friends, and wanted to stay in touch. They had only known each other for a week, but even their parents + siblings could see that there was something unique between the two of them! It wasn’t long before they were officially dating (albeit long distance!). As they got to know each other, that initial spark grew into a deep love, and it was clear that they were meant for each other. Fast forward a few years from dating to moving to the same city, to engagement… this summer, they finally became husband + wife!

Their wedding day was brimming with sweet emotion – laughter + happy tears filled their interactions. The celebration felt intentional + joyful and their guests were sincerely excited to celebrate with them. The entire event was held at Stonegate Glass Chapel near Branson, Missouri! The day was sunny + warm and this chapel in the woods was the perfect place for Riley + Madisen to start their marriage journey. (BONUS… it was a GORGEOUS space! :))

Riley + Madisen – we are thrilled for the two of you and loved every second of your wedding day. Thank-you for inviting us and thank-you for sharing your love. We wish you nothing but goodness on this marriage adventure! <3 July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017July 8, 2017

derrik + stephanie // summer wedding in metro detroit

Remember these two lovebirds from their engagement session last summer at Stoney Creek MetroPark? Well, last month – they became husband + wife! It was so wonderful! They married at Abiding Presence Lutheran Church in Rochester (just a few miles down the road from where they first met!) and dinner + dancing followed at Cherry Creek Golf Club in Shelby Township!

There was a genuine excitement in the air the entire day, because the event they’d been planning for over a year had finally arrived! These two put together a beautiful celebration – but more importantly, it spoke true to THEM and the individual lives they were joining as one. Their handwritten vows were sweet + sincere, their family + friends were so fun to be around, and their reception was so awesome! Not one detail was left untouched and it was such a delight to see how everything came together!

Derrik + Stephanie, it has been an honor to get to know you over the last year and witness as you committed your lives to each other. We hope this marriage journey is good to you and that you continue to fall deeper in love and enjoy the adventure!

heather + jason // downtown detroit engagement session

I met Heather last fall at a photo workshop that I was teaching. She was genuine + kind, and I instantly felt drawn to her personality + joy. I learned that she is a mom to beautiful daughter, she loves photography + sports, and works at a golf club… my kind of girl! Fast forward several months… and I get an email from Heather saying that she is recently engaged and planning a wedding… I couldn’t wait to hear more! Turns out, she met + fell in love with a man who also loves sports, golfing, and her daughter! :) They met at the golf club that Heather works at which is where they will be saying their vows in just under a month. It’s been so fun getting to know the two of them and connect on several similar interests. Their wedding is going to be SO fun… think Eastern Market, food trucks, lawn games, Slow’s BBQ… um, YEP. We can’t wait to celebrate with them!! :)

mike + ashley // southwest michigan wedding

Mike + Ashley serendipitously met in college… as two shy souls on the middle of a dance floor. They had an instant connection and amidst transition, travels, and training a pup, they continued to fall deeper in love and blend their lives together. Work settled them both in NYC (you may remember their Manhattan engagement session from this past winter!) and they began planning their wedding soon after Mike proposed on a trip to Maine. It didn’t take them long to decide on a wedding in Michigan where Ashley spent most of her summers. Though they have traveled the world together (literally!), the family cottage is one of their most favorite places. It just felt right to host their wedding there… and introduce their loved ones to lake life!

Guests traveled from Chicago, the east coast, the west coast, and even Africa to celebrate their nuptials. Their ceremony was held on the shore of the Paw Paw Lake Yacht Club. The sun was shining, the breeze was warm, and laughter filled the air all afternoon. The reception followed at the lovely MillCreek Wilde Barn just a few minutes away. There, guests enjoyed cocktail hour + games on the lawn and a delicious BBQ dinner before the band took the stage. It was a quintessential summer evening… I have to say, Michigan was really showing off for everyone! ;)

Besides the beautiful venues, the wonderful people, and gorgeous details, one of the best parts of the day was their ceremony! Mike + Ashley scripted the entire ceremony themselves – blending in poetry + scripture from the likes of Einstein, Mary Oliver, Jesus, and Kahlil Gibran. Together, they spoke the desire of having a marriage based on three core values of: curiosity, generosity, and individuality. It was sincere, hopeful, and full of love – the perfect beginning to a marriage journey.

Mike + Ashley, we hope that marriage is a wonderful adventure for you two. May you always stay curious, be generous, and respect the individuality of each other. May you wake up everyday trying to make something better for the other… and never ever forget to have fun :) Cheers!

Ps… We have to give a shout-out to these amazing vendors who helped make this day extra special for Mike + Ash!

sarah + brendan // belle isle engagement photography // detroit, michigan

So often, I think about how fun my job is and how wonderful it is that I get to photograph people and their relationships for a living. But even more than that, I’m often floored by how lucky I am to get to reconnect with friends from my past and celebrate some pretty momentous occasions with them. One such friend is Sarah! She + I have known each other since middle school. We were buddies throughout high school – we attended the same youth group together and many of my memories from that era involve Sarah somehow! I recall her being a constant source of humor, kindness, sarcasm, and a breath of fresh air. We’ve kept in touch here + there thanks to social media, but when she contacted me a few months ago as she began planning her wedding – I was so excited to see her in-person again and meet the lucky guy!

After our initial meeting with them, it was pretty clear… Sarah + Brendan are perfect together! They were setup by a co-worker and soon found out they have a lot in common! They both love the outdoors and traveling, they love their pups, she likes to bake (check out her blog!) and he likes to eat baked goods… :) They’ve been dating for a few years now and this past spring, while spending the weekend on a cherry farm in Northern Michigan, Brendan proposed to Sarah! She obviously said, ‘Yes!’ and they’ve been testing out wedding cake recipes ever since! They are getting married next month and we are elated to join them for the party! But first, we spent an evening in the city where it all began… Detroit!
